Varanasi is the India of your imagination. One of the most colourful and fascinating places on earth, surprises abound around every corner.

This is one of the world's oldest continually inhabited cities, and one of the holiest in Hinduism. Pilgrims come to the ghats lining the Ganges to wash away sins in the sacred waters or to cremate their loved ones. It's a particularly auspicious place to die, since expiring here offers moksha (liberation from the cycle of rebirth).

Day 1

Varanasi is one of the 7 holy cities in Hindi as is known for its religious and spiritual heritage. The city where the heart of the Hindu religion beats has a load of temples which represent Hindu culture and marvellous architecture. The most famous temple is the Kashi Vishwanath Temple, which has two domes built of gold. The other temples include the Durga Temple, Annapurna Temple, Ankatha Temple and Kalbhairav Temple. The city offers a wide variety of vegetarian lunch and dinner which will help you fulfil your taste desires in every meal. After visiting the temples in the morning, you can take a cab to Sarnath, 10 km away from Varanasi, to see a glimpse of Buddhist culture as it is the place where Gautama Buddha gave his first Dharma (lecture). In the evening, you should witness the evening aarti (prayer) which takes place at the Dasaswamedh Temple, and is a celebration of Hindu culture and traditions. You can take a boat ride to witness the aarti and also see the beautiful sunset from the Ganges. The beauty of the coordinated aarti is a pleasure to the eyes.

Day 2

On your second day, a definite ‘to do’ is to take a morning boat ride in the Ganges river to see the sunrise at about 5.30 am. The boat ride will take you through different ‘ghats’ for you to witness the Hindu culture and religious traditions. After witnessing the sunrise, you can return to your hotel for a wholesome breakfast and then head for Sarai Mohana Village, 6 km from Varanasi where you will get the opportunity to see the inspiring craftsmanship of traditional Indian weavers. In the evening, you can go for shopping to Vishwanath Lane, Thatheri Bazar and Godowlia.
